TITLE: Alamos Bridge

LOCATION: Alamos, Sonora
DESCRIPTION: In 1996 Kim Emerson and Alber De Matteis visited a special colonia on the outskirts of Alamos, Sonora, Mexico. There, the residents of this very poor colonia lived where the rains created a dangerous crossing, virtually cutting them off from the main part of town. For years the residents tried to get the City to build a bridge that would allow pedestrians to cross safely. It was Edith Saver of the organization “La Escuelita”, or The Little School, who challenged Emerson and De Matteis to raise funds in San Diego, CA to pay for the bridge construction. Eventually, the Mayor of Alamos matched the funds when volunteer engineer’s plans for the bridge were presented. After the bridge was completed, the residents of the colonia created a colorful mosaic on the sidewalk of the bridge. The bridge was called “Puente de Milagro”, or Miracle Bridge, because the residents agreed that the project was truly a miracle come true!
