TITLE: Our Lady of Guadalupe
ARTIST: Mexican artisans
LOCATION: St. Mary’s Cathedral, at Geary and Gough Sts
DESCRIPTION: Near the front of this majestic and modern cathedral, you will find a gorgeous 8 ft. x 4 ft. glass smalti mosaic of the Virgin of Guadalupe made by Mexican artisans. The fantastic carved frame adds to the mosaic’s luminescence and scale. The piece was purchased in the 1970s by Monsignor Boe. He brought her to San Francisco from Mexico, as an acknowledgement of his prayer that no workers were injured during the construction of the church. Legend has it that Carmen Miranda was also interested in purchasing this same piece for her home at the time.
