TITLE: Superimposed mosaic floor

LOCATION: The Crypt Museum under St. George Orthodox Cathedral
DESCRIPTION: The Crypt Museum under St. George Orthodox Cathedral. Superimposed mosaic floor: The upper mosaic was built in a later period and therefore partly destroyed the lower one, that of the assumed Anastasis Church.
The upper mosaic floor is a field of adjoining fans, each with a floret at its center. The lower and earlier mosaic floor has a geometric design.
Eight layers of occupation from the Hellenistic period to the present. Remains of six successive churches were found during the excavation process.
The Cathedral is the oldest church in the city of Beirut, Lebanon, and one of the oldest in the region - a testament that Christianity has been rooted in the region, and in Lebanon, since the religion's debut.
The archeologists aimed to locate the Byzantine church "Anastasis", which, according to ancient texts, was said to be near Beirut's famous law school before being leveled by an earthquake in 551 A.D.
