TITLE: Iowa State Capitol Mosaics ARTIST: Frederick Dielman LOCATION: Iowa State Capitol,East 9th and Grand Des Moines, IA (515) 281-5591 DESCRIPTION: Go figure; I grew up in Iowa and as many times as I have passed by the Capitol building I never went inside to see the grandeur within. Well look what I found!! Designed by Frederick Deilman; a painting, he did smaller paintings and then went to Venice and the "Venetian Murano Co." and had them render it in mosaic. The panels are around 6' tall, most of the tesserae are full A cuts and are definitely Orsoni smalti I can tell. It's an allegory mural with each of the panels representing a theme; Defense, Charities, Executive, Legislature, Judiciary, Education. A gem in Des Moines under my nose!
If you are in Des Moines, Iowa this is worth the trip; not only is the mosaic breathtaking, but the entire interior of the Capitol building is a splendor to behold! Related Website CONTRIBUTOR: Michael Kruzich - , USA |
