TITLE: Nebula Chroma ARTIST: Sonia King LOCATION: Main Lobby, Children's Medical Center of Dallas, 1935 Medical District Dr Dallas, TX 75235 DESCRIPTION: This dynamic mosaic mural is the focal point of the multi-story, main lobby in the newest tower at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas, one of the largest pediatric healthcare providers in the nation. Nebula Chroma was created from a huge variety of materials and the hand-cut tesserae vary in size and scale from 1/8” to 2”, enhancing the visual impact. The tiles not only change shape, size and patterning but also handle light in multiple ways, varying from shiny, matte, iridescent, glazed, clear and rounded tile surfaces.
The visual impact of the Nebula Chroma mosaic intensifies from the unexpected juxtapositions of one tesserae next to another, interacting in multiple ways: color, scale, texture, reflectivity and so on. The location has natural light during the day from the three-story glass wall of the atrium and the ceiling features fiber optic 'stars' that play off the reflective bits of mosaic at night. The mosaic is grouted using a hand-colored “fresco” grout technique developed by the artist for Children’s Medical. The shifting colors add depth and visual stimulation.
