TITLE: "Behold," 1963 ARTIST: Ben Shahn LOCATION: Hollis F. Price Library, LeMoyne-Owen College, 807 Walker DESCRIPTION: The mosaic was commissioned by architect Francis Gassner. The 21' x 10' glass tile mosaic is installed in the entry of the library. "It depicts a man sprawled on his back, but with a knee bent as if trying to rise. One hand reaches up toward abstract symbols that represent science and the world of knowledge and ideas-- a world not limited by race, creed or color."A menacing face looms over the figure, its scrolled lines filling the dark sky and suggesting fears, known and unknown. But beyond the outline of the oppressively suggested face the bright stars glow serenely." --Nashville Tennessean 12/15/1963
Text is from the Third Psalm.
