TITLE: Coats of arms of the City of Galt, the City of Kitchener and Waterloo County
ARTIST: Dante Edissi.
LOCATION: Registry Building, 122 Frederick St, Kitchener
DESCRIPTION: This art-deco era building is known as the Registry Building, and has always been one of the municipal buildings for the Region of Waterloo or the City of Kitchener, two levels of our regional government here in Kitchener-Waterloo. The mosaic (1939) with the regional coats-of-arms was made by an Italian immigrant whose son, Dennis Edissi, still owns a local flooring (tile and terrazzo) company called “twin city tile”. The materials are all smalti and gold, and the quality and detail are top-notch. For an outdoor mosaic in Canada, this has survived our weather with remarkable ease and no noticeable damage, thanks to obviously good workmanship in the first place.
