TITLE: Open Circle ARTIST: Les Birleson LOCATION: 11th Avenue and Riverside DESCRIPTION: This work by Les Birleson, commissioned by the City's Arts in Public Places Commission, is located in front of one of the City's Sump Stations and next door to Congregation B'nai Israel. The synagogue was firebombed in 1999 and has recently been rebuilt. "Open Circle" consists of 25 tons of white Sierra granite, rendered in 14 hand-chiseled various-sized boulders (totems, benches, sentries, etc.) which are carefully placed along a crushed granite path. The installation also includes a mosaic "prayer wheel" or "spirit wheel" which is situated in a three-tiered, S-shaped pool. There are 17,000 pieces of glass in the mosaic.
